He comments, “Draeger not only manufactures a high quality range of products but it also offers excellent training, service, maintenance and support via experts from all areas of industry. I am delighted to join the company and to bring my knowledge of the emergency services as well as industrial hazards to the service and support team. I am looking forward to developing our new Safety Centres in Surrey, Aberdeen and Plymouth to maintain and improve our service, training and support across the UK. We are considering the development of further local Safety Centres across the UK in support of our expanding business. We want to be more local to our customers to help us be more responsive.”

As well as preparing for possible terrorist attacks and avian flu outbreaks, he has managed many industrial incidents involving fire, explosive gases and toxic substances. He was a national strategic adviser, working with the Government on major emergency incidents and was also the national fire and rescue adviser to the Local Government Association on resilience and emergency planning. This level of expertise will prove invaluable when understanding customer problems and recognising the need for fast, efficient turnaround of equipment.

He adds, “Whether we are training personnel, carrying out service and maintenance, or recommending equipment for sale or hire, Draeger offers a service that is not only personalised and professional but it is pertinent to the task. Our extensive knowledge of hazards and their effects, the workplace environment and its dangers and, of course, financial restraints mean that we can offer an ideal solution that is workable, cost effective and, above all, safe. My intention is to bring this level of knowledge and expertise to our customers on a local basis via our regional Safety Centres.”

Awarded the Queen’s Fire Service Medal for distinguished service and dedication to improving community safety, Brian spent 7 years at Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service as Chief Fire Officer, and before that, four years as Deputy Chief. His previous experience includes a further 22 years with various Brigades including London, Oxfordshire, Cleveland, Fife and County Durham, as well as 3 years seconded to the national Fire Service College at Moreton-in-Marsh as Head of Operational Command, Offshore Firefighting and International Training.

Draeger Safety is proud to have passed a formal evaluation of its Polytron 7000 Oxygen and Toxic Gas Detector by the British Nuclear Industry Smart Instruments Working Group. The evaluation included quality control and assurance, proven in-use data of the instrument and production methods for both the hardware and software elements of the transmitter.

The Draeger Polytron 7000, with self-diagnostic functions that ensure that no failures go unreported or are missed, has been classified as suitable for use as a SIL 1 (Safety Integrity Level) instrument under IEC61508, Electric Electrical and Programmable Electronic Equipment used in Safety Systems.

Adding Value with Draeger

As even more emphasis is being placed on the need to maintain safety whilst still saving time and money, lifetime ownership costs have become a crucial element in the selection process. Thanks to advanced technology which has lowered maintenance and calibration requirements, both costs and system downtime can now be significantly reduced.

Combining reliability with cost effective operation, the modular Draeger Polytron 7000 is a prime example of how Draeger systems can bring added value and peace of mind to nuclear applications. With enhanced flexibility it also offers ease of use, reduced maintenance and minimal system downtime to any application requiring intrinsically safe gas detection.

Pre-calibrated for easy operation, the Draeger range of electrochemical sensors incorporate “plug-and-play” technology. The sensor is simply plugged in and the detector is ready to use with no further intervention from the operator. Replacing a sensor is equally easy and, because of their large size and accuracy, the sensors offer a very long life, with calibration intervals of up to one year to further enhance the cost reducing benefits.

Draeger Fire and Gas Detection Systems offers products, services and system solutions for all encompassing toxic, flammable and oxygen detection, flame detection and design, build, commission and maintenance of fire and gas detection systems for protection of personnel and assets.

Operating as an all-round safety network, the new Draeger X-zone 5000 uses wireless technology to automatically connect multiple monitors for reliable, continuous detection of toxic, combustible and explosive gases.

Ensuring that personnel have the confidence to work worry free, even in the most dangerous environments, these transportable units are quick to deploy and easy to set up. Issuing a loud alarm as soon as a gas is detected, they also change colour to clearly identify the alarm status. The areas where gas has been detected are indicated by red visual alarms. Safe atmospheres and, therefore, a safe escape route are confirmed by green visual alarms.

By simply placing Draeger X-zone 5000 units around potentially dangerous areas or where maintenance or shutdown work is being carried out, these robust, waterproof units will ensure increased levels of safety in any application. As soon as one of the units detects a gas it immediately transmits an alarm to each of the others, warning everyone in the area that a danger exists. At the same time, a loud evacuation alarm is emitted and a patented 360º alarm amplifier ensures that it is heard with the same intensity in all directions.

Up to 25 Draeger X-zones can be used at any one time, forming a complete wireless network to suit the specific application, including those where an explosion hazard might exist. In addition to Zone 0 ATEX performance, they also offer a lower cost of ownership by combining flexible monitoring capabilities with a long sensor life and enhanced battery performance.

Allowing gas ingress from every side, it can be fitted with up to four sensors to detect as many as five gases at once. The Drager X-zone 5000 provides simultaneous measurement of gases and vapours such as hydrocarbons, hydrogen and other explosive, combustible or toxic gases.

Unlike portable instruments which usually leave the scene with the wearer, the Draeger X-zone 5000 can be left in situ for up to 120 hours continuous operation, issuing an alarm as long as the danger exists.

As part of its ongoing commitment to improving fire fighter safety and operational performance, Draeger Safety has developed the UCF range of Thermal Imaging Cameras. For the first time, firefighters no longer have to conduct a risk assessment before taking a thermal imaging camera into a potentially explosive environment because the range includes models which are intrinsically safe and have ATEX Approval applied for. Ensuring that entry protocols can be followed with single-handed operation, the cameras also provide “the complete picture” by combining traditional firefighting and normal view modes.

Saving valuable time and enabling firefighters to enter the incident without delay, the camera is safe to use in any environment without risk of explosion. In line with entry protocol, one hand is left free for users to feel their way, steady or protect themselves or help casualties, whilst the other hand operates the lightweight camera, single-handedly via touch button controls.

Being able to see the “whole picture” is essential for accurate, fast decision making. When entering incident, firefighters need to determine the source of heat and the location of people, especially casualties, as quickly as possible. The broad thermal operating range of the UCF cameras allows the traditional modes of “firefighting” and “normal” to be viewed simultaneously, enabling the user to see both the fire source and other people in a single clear image.

Hot spots, which can be a danger after dowsing, need to be avoided or dealt with effectively. Often invisible to the naked eye, they can now be identified easily with the integrated laser pointer which pinpoints the exact location of any thermal areas.

In addition, when entering a new area such as a doorway, hatch, window, confined space or even turning a corner, the user can select a freeze frame facility to view hidden dangers. Providing a clear snapshot of the immediate vicinity, this allows the firefighter to observe the space, decide a plan of action and, if necessary, consult and share the image with colleagues before entering the danger zone. Should firefighters need more information or advice on a particular situation or risk they can choose the data transmission option which uses both video and sound to send images back to the command team. These images can also be recorded for immediate or post event playback for training and evaluation purposes.

Quick identification of a hazard or individual is vital when scanning an area but it is equally important that nothing is overlooked. The enhanced shutter speed of the UCF cameras provides sharp, clear images of the incident during initial evaluation. Equally, it is imperative that any thermal changes are identified easily, regardless of the lighting conditions. When moving between rooms and buildings or even into bright daylight, the integral ambient light sensor on the Draeger UCF range automatically adjusts the screen so that the image remains clearly visible.

Efficient use of battery life can maximise camera readiness throughout the incident, particularly during long periods of operation. Providing more safety to the firefighter as a result of longer visual support, the auto standby function conserves the 4-hour battery life when the camera is not being operated.

As with many incidents confined space entry can be difficult, particularly when crawling and carrying a thermal imaging camera. An integral crawl handle ensures that firefighters can move more freely and allows the operator to use the UCF camera effectively.
